Officers from the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) at Katunayake Airport arrested a Sri Lankan passenger early yesterday morning (10) while he was attempting to smuggle a stock of ‘Hashish’ worth Rs. 47.7 million into the country.
The suspect is a 24-year-old male resident of Grandpass, Colombo, who is employed as a sales assistant.
The suspect arrived at Katunayake Airport at 12.30 a.m. from Bangkok, Thailand.
Upon inspecting his luggage, officers discovered 4 kg and 778g of Hashish, hidden inside 15 packages meticulously packed and disguised as ‘Chocolates’.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court. Authorities intend to obtain a detention order to conduct further investigations into the smuggling operation.
