Arizona doctor faces felony drug charges after being searched boarding a cruise ship to the Bahamas with Ecstasy, Magic Mushrooms and THC

MIAMI (KVOA) – A Southern Arizona surgeon faces felony charges after being arrested in Miami last week as he was about to board a cruise ship to the Bahamas.

Dr. Jacob Henrichsen’s vacation was stopped short when police found drugs in his suitcase. Border Patrol agents in Florida arrested him after finding he was carrying Ecstasy, Magic Mushrooms and THC on Oct. 20.

Henrichsen made his first appearance in a Miami courtroom via video last week. The doctor works at Mount Graham Regional Medical Center. Henrichsen is out of jail on $40,000 bond and faces one count of trafficking almost 12 grams of Ecstasy, one count of possession of Psilocybin and one count of possession of THC.

News 4 Tucson obtained court documents that state when police searched Henrichsen’s suitcase they found capsules, gummies, mints, pills with a Tesla logo, a vape pen, lollipops and two chocolate bars laced with Magic Mushrooms.

“Just so you understand, the weights are a bit overrepresented here,” Henrichsen’s attorney told the judge. “These are mostly gummies with sugar and water. Those are small quantities of MDMA inside. A little bag of candy. It does sound like a lot, but it’s not like he had 11 grams of pills which would be 20 pills, 25 pills because the entirety of the pill would count, as opposed to a gummy bear.”

In a video we found on his hospital’s social media, Henrichsen said he worked at the University of Arizona before medical school and before moving to Safford.

News 4 Tucson reached out to Mount Graham Regional Medical Center for comment about Henrichsen’s arrest. In a statement, a hospital spokesman said:

“We are aware of the news of an arrest involving Dr. Henrichsen. Our leadership is taking the allegations seriously. We have no knowledge of any previous incidents of this kind. Be assured we will act responsibly as we learn more. The safety, privacy, and care of our patients remain our absolute highest priorities. Because this news is an allegation, as well as a confidential personnel matter, MGRMC cannot provide further comments or details at this time.”

News 4 Tucson reached out to Henrichsen for comment. We have not yet heard back.

Henrichsen is due back in a Florida courtroom Wednesday morning.
