Tyler Boebert, the 21-year-old son of Rep. Lauren Boebert, was arrested in Colorado on five felony charges after investigators accused him of recording and sharing sexually explicit material involving a 17-year-old girl.
Garfield County’s 49-page arrest affidavit alleges that videos involving teenagers were circulated through newly created Instagram accounts. Tyler was arrested on August 9 and posted a $10,000 bond the same day.
Court records showed Tyler facing three counts of sexual exploitation of a child, including charges tied to inducement or enticement, possession with intent to distribute and videotaped material. He also faced two counts of delinquency in relation to a minor.
Tyler is the eldest son of the Colorado Republican congresswoman and her ex-husband, Jayson Boebert. He has built a public record of legal trouble that predates the current charges.
Before his mother won her House seat in 2020, Tyler largely stayed out of the spotlight, but his repeated arrests in Garfield County over the past two years have made him a familiar face.
Lauren addressed the latest case in a statement, saying, “I love my son. We take these allegations very seriously and pray for everyone affected during this challenging time.”
The charges stem from a Safe2Tell report that alerted authorities to videos and images involving teenagers ranging in age from 14 to 18. Investigators identified 16 videos and images in total, as well as an Instagram group chat with approximately 124 members that appeared to have helped circulate some of the material.
A warrant for Tyler’s arrest was issued on Thursday, August 6, before he was taken into custody. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation, with the case later undergoing felony review by the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
The latest allegations are not Tyler’s first encounter with the law. In February 2024, he was arrested in connection with a series of vehicle break-ins and thefts in Garfield County.
He initially faced 22 charges, including four felony counts of possessing stolen identification documents and one felony conspiracy charge, along with several misdemeanor and petty offenses.
Tyler later pleaded guilty to attempted identity theft. He was sentenced to two years of probation and 80 hours of community service and was prohibited from using controlled substances.
The Boebert family’s legal troubles have also involved Tyler’s father. Jayson Boebert was arrested in January 2024 following two separate incidents, including a physical altercation involving Lauren at a restaurant. Tyler later reported his father to the authorities, alleging that Jayson had assaulted him.
Jayson faced multiple charges, including disorderly conduct, third-degree trespass, obstruction of a peace officer, prohibited use of weapons, harassment and third-degree assault. He later pleaded guilty to one count of reckless endangerment.
Lauren, who has represented Colorado in Congress since January 2021, has also faced public scrutiny over her conduct. In 2023, she was removed from a Denver theater during a performance of Beetlejuice: The Musical after other patrons reported disruptive behavior, including vaping and inappropriate physical contact with her date.
She has built her political profile around conservative positions on issues including abortion, drag performances and transgender rights, while frequently emphasizing family values.
