Images from the 52nd G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, have intensified scrutiny of President Donald Trump‘s physical condition, with observers pointing to swollen ankles, a hoarse voice, a limp handshake with French President Emmanuel Macron and what appeared to be a swollen left hand.
Trump’s ankles were visible beneath high-riding pants as he met with Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Évian-les-Bains. The images, captured by Reuters photographer Evelyn Hockstein, quickly spread across social media and news outlets, reigniting debate about the health of the oldest president ever inaugurated in American history.
During the bilateral meeting, Trump’s voice appeared to wobble and crack before becoming increasingly hoarse. His left hand also appeared swollen in photographs from the engagement.
The appearance was not limited to a single event. During another G7 engagement, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented Trump with a replica German soccer jersey featuring the name Trump and the number 47. As Merz handed over the jersey, Trump’s hand again appeared swollen in photographs.
Inside the limp handshake that went viral
However, Trump’s greeting with Macron on June 15 generated the most discussion online.
Trump, on his second day as an 80-year-old, greeted the French president in Évian-les-Bains with what many observers described as an unusually weak handshake. He appeared to put little weight into the greeting and looked drowsy during the meeting.

The brief handshake contrasted sharply with the pair’s history of highly publicized encounters. Their first meeting in May 2017 featured a nearly 30-second grip that left both men with white knuckles. At the 2018 G7 Summit, Macron’s handshake was so forceful it reportedly left a visible thumb imprint on Trump’s hand.
Hoarse voice and drowsy appearance
Trump’s voice sounded noticeably strained throughout his meeting with Macron, leading some social media users to speculate that the raspiness stemmed from cheering at a UFC event the previous night.
Trump had already drawn online attention after appearing to fall asleep during a UFC event held at the White House to mark his 80th birthday.
CNN medical analyst Jonathan Reiner previously raised concerns about what he described as “severe daytime somnolence,” citing instances in which Trump appeared visibly drowsy during public events, including the 2026 Memorial Day ceremony. Reiner said the pattern could be associated with elevated risks of cognitive decline and cardiovascular stress, arguing that persistent and visible drowsiness in a nearly 80-year-old would not typically be dismissed as jet lag.
