Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly about the private ALS battle that preceded her longtime partner Bryan Randall’s death. On the “SmartLess” podcast, she shared that keeping his diagnosis secret became a “huge weight” she carried mostly alone.
The 62-year-old actress explained that Randall, who died at 57 in August 2023, asked her not to disclose his illness. “I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request and I tried — I honored it,” Bullock said.
Randall’s request was difficult for Bullock
Bullock said she understood why Randall wanted privacy, but his request made the period even more difficult and isolating.
“I know why he asked me not [to],” she said. She noted the situation was especially difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic because “it isolated me in the process” as she carried the “huge weight” of his diagnosis.
Randall lived with ALS privately for three years before his death. After his passing, his family confirmed he had chosen to keep his illness private, and those close to him respected that decision.
Grief came early
Bullock also described how Randall’s illness affected their lives before his passing.
“I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” Bullock said, adding that he was “ill for half of our relationship.”
She later put the experience as: “My person left a lot earlier than the body left.”
Bullock said she did not fully process the situation at the time, as she was focused on getting through each day.
“I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill, you know?” she said.
She eventually confided in Jennifer Aniston and close friends
For a time, Bullock’s sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was the only person aware of Randall’s diagnosis.
She eventually confided in friends Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, wife of “SmartLess” co-host and Ozark star Jason Bateman.
Bullock described the situation as especially challenging “when the physical illness was then coupled with the mental health aspect of things.”
“It’s something that people don’t talk about… it was a trifecta that was pretty dark,” she added.
Bullock focused on her children
In addition to caring for Randall, Bullock supported their family as his health declined. She and Randall co-parented her son Louis and daughter Laila, as well as Randall’s daughter, Skylar.
“You have to quietly plan,” Bullock said, referring to the practical realities of managing ALS.
She added that she remained aware of the impact on the children.
“It doesn’t scare me — not the illness itself, it doesn’t scare me. I can see and be around just about anything. But I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw [Randall] as a father figure.”
Randall, a model-turned-photographer, began dating Bullock in 2015. Following his death, Bullock stepped back from the spotlight to focus on her children and healing.
