Princess Diana would have been ‘puzzled’ by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, her former royal butler says


Princess Diana would’ve reportedly been perplexed by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s post-royal life.

According to the late Princess of Wales’ former butler Paul Burrell, Diana wouldn’t have approved of how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are using their ties to The Firm after leaving the institution.

Diana would’ve been ‘puzzled’ by Harry and Meghan

Since departing England in 2020, Harry and Meghan have seemingly leveraged their titles for financial opportunities.

The ex-staffer told InStyle that the Spare author’s mother would “have been puzzled” by his and his wife’s ventures.

“Diana did everything for other people and didn’t make a cent out of her titles,” Burrell claimed.

Diana would have ‘counseled’ Harry and Meghan

The former close confidant of Diana’s claimed that if she hadn’t passed away in a car crash in 1997, circumstances might be different for the royal family.

“She [Diana] would have counseled them, helped them along the way,” Burrell alleged.

Despite any reservations, he added that “Diana would have applauded their fight for freedom and their risky strategy to break free and live a normal life.”

Harry believes Diana would’ve wanted him to leave the U.K.  

During an appearance at The New York Times DealBook Summit in 2024, Harry explained that his mother would’ve wanted him to be free of the responsibility of being a senior member of The Firm.

“When you are kind of trapped within this bubble, it kind of feels like there’s no way out,” the 41-year-old said.

“What happened to my mum and the fact that I was a kid and felt helpless, there comes the inner turmoil. I felt helpless. One of my biggest weaknesses is feeling helpless,” he noted.

Diana planned to move to America before she died

In a 2003 interview on Good Morning America, Burrell alleged that Diana was planning on moving to America before her death.

“[Diana said] ‘This is our new life, just won’t it be great? Think of the lifestyle the boys [Harry and Prince William] — nobody’s judgmental here in America. You don’t have the class system, you don’t have the establishment,’” he recalled the 36-year-old telling him.
