Pink, who is set to host this year’s Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall on June 7, recently revealed why she hasn’t starred on Broadway yet, calling her reason “stupid.”
Pink may not have stepped foot on Broadway to date, but her songs are already part of two hit jukebox shows: & Juliet and Moulin Rouge!
Speaking to USA Today, the singer, who shares daughter Willow and son Jameson with husband Carey Hart, opened up about her decision to skip Broadway for the sake of her family.
“I’m very attached [to] my kids. They come with me on tour, and we travel together. I cannot imagine eight shows a week where I’m not telling them what to do or finding their iPad for them. I mean, it’s a stupid answer, but it is my truth! It’s a real commitment,” Pink explained.
Pink had one chance to star in Broadway’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but she ended up turning it down.
She told the outlet, “I once had the opportunity to be the first female Hedwig, and I should have done it. But it was 10 years ago, and I was probably in Germany on tour.”
Speaking of her chances of playing Hedwig in the future, the performer joked, “Wouldn’t that be amazing? The 80-year-old Hedwig, when my kids are in college.”
Pink’s love of live performances began at an early age and has influenced much of her work. She recalled how her mother, an ER nurse, would save throughout the year just to take her to shows as a child.
She recounted, “It was my favorite night with my mom every year. We would go see Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, La Cage aux Folles… I just love theater and live performance. It definitely shaped what I do as Pink.”
Pink’s daughter, Willow, also dreams of performing on Broadway. To help nurture her ambitions, the star recently relocated her family to New York, where Willow has been developing her acting, singing and dancing skills.
As a proud mother, Pink never fails to praise the 15-year-old. According to Pink, “[Willow is] amazing. She’s more talented than I ever was.”
Pink further added, “I think she’s got a shot; she’s in this for the long haul. She also gets straight A-pluses, which makes me wonder, ‘Is she my daughter?’”
