‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ star says he ‘ruined himself’: ‘I was wonderful-looking at one point’

My Best Friend’s Wedding star Rupert Everett opened up about how he’s aged in the last few years.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 67-year-old actor said, “I ruined myself. Now I’m almost crippled as a result. I could never be bothered to do all those things, like stretching, which were necessary for lifting weights, because your tendons get tighter and tighter.”

Rupert Everett recently admitted that he ‘ruined’ himself by not working out properly when he was still young. MEGA

Everett, who has also starred in hits like St. Trinians (and its sequel), A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Shrek 2, now fears his “demise will be musculoskeletal.” Today, the actor calls himself “chubby.”

When told that his younger version was “too skinny” during the interview, Everett said, “No, I wasn’t. I was wonderful-looking at one point. I had muscles. Everything.”

However, there was indeed a time when Everett was “too skinny” and had yet to build his physique. The star revealed that he was once so bony that he would always wear bodysuits under his costumes, and the directors would never know because he would “go into the fittings for the costumes with all [his] things on.”

“I met these two queens in Tufnell Park [in North London] who made bodysuits, and they made me a false bottom, false calves, false shoulders, false everything,” he told the interviewer, adding that he wore them everywhere, including in movies.

In an October 2024 episode of the “How to Fail With Elizabeth Day” podcast, Everett talked about his failed “Hollywood revival,” which he blamed on 2000’s The Next Best Thing.

“[The Next Best Thing] came to me after My Best Friend’s Wedding. I was very popular in Hollywood for that year… [But] everything went wrong, really, in the making of it. And it completely finished things for me in Hollywood,” he said (per Entertainment Weekly).

Today, Everett has a piece of advice for his younger self. “One of the things you really have to take on board is that everyone has paid quite a lot of money to see you, and so, no matter how depressed you might be feeling, or how you might feel you’re missing out on something,” he told The Guardian before trailing off.

“I always felt I was missing out on some mythical life that was taking place somewhere else. That was my problem,” Everett concluded.
