Matthew Bellamy and wife Elle Evans split last year and he just confirmed the news for the first time.
Rumors swirled in February 2026 that the couple had ended things and now Matt is breaking his silence on the breakup.
In a new interview with The I Paper, Matt said the separation is “hard to explain.”
“Because it’s one of those situations that involves something that people wouldn’t normally think it is. It was a set of really unexpected circumstances. It’s the kind of thing no one really prepares for in life,” Matt said. “It threw me off, and I had to prioritize looking after the kids and creating stability at home.”
Matt, 48, and Elle, 36, were first linked in summer 2015, got engaged in December 2017, and married in August 2019. They share daughter Lovella, 6, and son George, 2.
Muse‘s new album The Wow! Signal was written amid the breakup when Matt was “right in the depths of this life-changing experience. And it was just – boom. It would just pour out of me. It might have been the easiest album for me to make, because it was such a catharsis. It became a lifeline for me.”
The album is out now.
