McConnell’s office confirmed on Monday, June 22, that he will not participate in Senate votes this week, despite signs of optimism from colleagues in recent days. “Sen. McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week,” his office said in a statement.
Ever since the veteran lawmaker was admitted to an undisclosed hospital, aides have offered no public explanation for his condition, saying only that he continues to receive high-quality medical treatment.

McConnell’s voting terminal has remained inactive since June 15, leaving him absent from a series of confirmation votes, policy measures and procedural decisions. Among the most significant votes was a closely watched June 16 vote on a War Powers resolution, S.J.Res. 172, which sought to direct the removal of unauthorized U.S. armed forces from the Iran conflict. The measure narrowly failed, with an outcome of 47-48. He also missed votes on a housing supply proposal and an immigration appeals board procedural rule.
McConnell’s absence stands in contrast to his active participation in Senate duties earlier this month, including the Senate’s lengthy overnight budget reconciliation “vote-a-rama” sessions on June 4 and 5.

Prior to the latest announcement from the senator’s office, Senate Republicans had expressed confidence that McConnell was making progress. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said last week that the former GOP leader “sounded good” and remained engaged in legislative developments despite being away from the Senate floor.
