Lisa Kudrow didn’t have to think twice about participating in the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel.
Speaking to Extra at an event recently, the Friends alum opened up about the much-awaited film.
The ‘Romy and Michele’ sequel was an ‘immediate yes’ for Lisa Kudrow
“We did a movie 30 years ago called Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, and we just finished shooting a sequel,” Kudrow confirmed during the interview.
Reprising the role of Michele Weinberger was “an immediate yes for us,” Kudrow shared, seemingly referring to herself and her costar Mira Sorvino, who plays Romy White.
“It was very fun. It was really fun,” she continued. “[The fans] seem to be excited; the people who loved the first movie seem to be excited about this next one.”
Kudrow didn’t have any information on a release date.
The long-awaited sequel was first announced in June
Back in June, 20th Century Studios announced the sequel to a sea of cheers. They posted a picture of both lead actresses sitting with their backs to the camera, in director’s chairs with the title Romy and Michele 2 on the back of them. “The reunion you’ve been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production,” the movie studio captioned the post.
Famous fans lost their minds in the comment section, with Olivia Munn writing, “Be still my heart 😍.”
Sorvino herself said, “It’s finally happening. Bursting with joy to be ‘reunited!’”
“gathering my post-its,” added Kerry Washington.
“Oh my god POST IT all,” chimed in Whitney Cummings.
Angela Kinsey, Michelle Visage, Dannii Minogue and Hayley Kiyoko were also among the excited celebs.
What we know about the ‘Romy and Michele’ sequel so far
Not much is known about the sequel just yet, but Robin Schiff returned to write the script, while original stars Alan Cumming and Camryn Manheim are set to reprise their roles. Keegan-Michael Key will also join the cast as a new addition.
Romy and Michele still own a fashion boutique in Beverly Hills and are setting their sights on finding true love, the two protagonists teased at a Disney23 event.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at D23, Kudrow shared what has and hasn’t changed about the main characters.
“When we left off, they were in their brand new store, so they still have a store,” she said. “They don’t live with each other anymore. And they are making a real effort this time to maybe partner with some guys.”
The original movie is a cult classic
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion came out in 1997, and told the hilarious story of two best friends preparing for their 10-year high school reunion — having not exactly achieved the success in life they had hoped to.
It’s full of unforgettable one-liners, and on many people’s “most rewatchable movies” list.
