Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s daughter Vivienne has filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court to legally change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie.
According to court documents obtained by People, the 18-year-old listed the reason as “personal” and is the fourth of Jolie and Pitt’s six children to seek a legal name change since their 2016 split.
The filing confirms a decision that she had already made publicly. In May 2024, Vivienne received a credit as “Vivienne Jolie” in the Playbill for the Broadway production of The Outsiders, which she helped produce alongside her mother.
Before this, Zahara had sought to legally change her name to Zahara Marley Jolie, while Maddox is requesting to become Maddox Chivan Jolie. Their sister Shiloh has already successfully petitioned to legally drop “Pitt,” filing three days after her 18th birthday.
That leaves two of the six siblings still carrying Pitt’s surname. Only Pax, 23 and Vivienne’s twin brother, Knox, have kept Brad’s last name. Pax is also the only one of the two who still maintains a relationship with Brad’s family, despite a strained relationship with the actor.
A representative close to Pitt addressed the pattern of name changes in a statement to People before Vivienne’s filing became public. “It’s sad to see someone repeatedly publicize their successful alienation of their children from the other parent,” the source said.
In 2024, the F1 actor also reacted to Shiloh dropping his surname as a source close to him reported to People that he was “aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name,” adding, “He’s never felt more joy than when she was born. He always wanted a daughter,”
“The reminders that he’s lost his children is, of course, not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them. It’s very sad,” adds the insider.
Tension between Pitt and his children has surfaced publicly on more than one occasion and their son Pax has been especially vocal.
In a Father’s Day post from years earlier, Pax called Pitt a “world-class a*ole” and accused him of being a “f*ing awful human being,” referencing a photo of Pitt accepting his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Published by Daily Mail, the caption further added, “You have no consideration or empathy toward your four youngest children who tremble in fear when in your presence.”
Jolie and Pitt’s split has shaped much of the public conversation surrounding their children’s decisions to distance themselves from the Pitt surname. Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016, citing irreconcilable differences and initially sought sole physical custody of their six children.
In May 2021, a private judge tentatively ruled that the former couple would share custody, but the ruling was later vacated after an appeals court disqualified the judge over an undisclosed conflict of interest. While the couple finalized their divorce in late 2024, they have continued to battle over financial matters.
Among the biggest disputes is Château Miraval, the French winery they once co-owned. Pitt has accused Jolie of breaching their agreement by selling her stake in the business to the Stoli Group, controlled by Russian-born billionaire Yuri Shefler, without his consent. Jolie has denied wrongdoing and the lawsuit remains ongoing.
