Josh Radnor admitted he is “not even a little bit” close with his former How I Met Your Mother co-stars, during his appearance on the “Half the Picture” podcast.
His statement might shock fans who believed everyone on the show shared a deep bond after working on the sitcom for nine seasons.
Josh Radnor assures there is no bad blood between HIMYM co-stars
After revealing that the How I Met Your Mother cast does not share a tight-knit bond, Radnor quickly clarified that his blunt answer doesn’t mean there’s a feud between them.
“I don’t mean that in any dramatic way,” he said, noting that Neil Patrick Harris appeared on his podcast, “How We Made Your Mother.” Their conversation gave the former co-stars a chance to discuss the strain they experienced on set.
“We had Neil on the podcast and he and I had a really interesting conversation about some of the tension we had on set that was fascinating and kind of healing,” Radnor said.
He still occasionally connects with Jason Segel and Cobie Smulders and they exchange texts when something reminds them of a funny moment from the sitcom.
However, it has been a “really long time” since Radnor has seen his former cast members. Smulders has also appeared on his podcast twice, but most of their recent contact was through Zoom.
In 2024, Alyson Hannigan attended Radnor and Jordana Jacobs‘ wedding, but he has not seen her since.
Radnor on why the HIMYM cast’s bond felt familial
Radnor compared his time on How I Met Your Mother to an intense period of college life. He described their time together as “very intense” and how one “can’t imagine not seeing each other every day ’cause you’ve seen each other every day for so long.”
However, there comes a time when “it disperses and you go out and live your life.” He also stated that the cast feels “more like family than friends” to him and his reasoning was quite interesting.
“You don’t get to choose your family. We were cast. We didn’t choose each other,” he said. “But you also have love that is quite deep and rich and probably everlasting. But it’s not an active love.”
He summed up how this process is a part of their craft and explained, “Acting is a lot of little love affairs that you have and then you move on.”
