First lady Melania Trump faced criticism for skipping Sen. Lindsey Graham’s funeral alongside her husband, President Donald Trump, as new details emerged about what’s been keeping her busy.
The memorial for the Republican lawmaker from South Carolina marked the second high-profile event in a row that the first lady missed in recent weeks, as she also declined to attend the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.
Melania’s aide reveals new project
The president delivered speeches at both Graham’s funeral on July 28 and the WHCD on July 24, but the first lady did not appear alongside him.
The White House and the first lady’s office did not explain her absence when contacted by Newsweek. The White House previously told Fox News that a scheduling conflict kept her from attending the WHCD.
As questions swirled about Melania’s whereabouts, her senior advisor Marc Beckman highlighted one of the projects the first lady has been working on.
Taking to his Instagram Stories, Marc shared an announcement that read, “U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. News / First Lady Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future FYI Initiative Marks Seven Years with Major Program Enhancements. Foster Youth to Independence Program Provides Vulnerable Youth with a Pathway to Housing Stability and Self-Sufficiency,” adding, “It treats housing as an investment in the next generation rather than just another governmental safety net, explained First Lady Melania Trump (@flotus).”

On August 4, Marc announced another new project during an appearance on Real America’s Voice, revealing that a docuseries about the first lady will arrive in a few months on Prime Video.
“This fall, we are following the film with a docuseries, surrounding the first lady,” he said. “It’s a completely different look at her world. It gives the viewers a little bit of a peek into what happens right at the beginning of the new 47th presidential administration.”
The series follows the January release of the Amazon MGM documentary Melania, which reportedly grossed just under $17 million after Amazon MGM Studios spent nearly $75 million acquiring and marketing the film.
“If you saw the film, we only captured 20 days of the first lady’s life. We opened the window a little bit into her private life, her marriage, her family; we open a little deeper into her career, as well as her philanthropy,” Marc explained. “With the docuseries, it’s a little bit different. It’s shot different, it’s a different story, it’s a full new experience for the viewers, and that’s going to be coming this fall.”
Melania’s tribute to Lindsey

Following the senator’s unexpected death at 71 on July 11, the first lady issued a statement honoring the conservative lawmaker.
“I am saddened by the unexpected passing of Senator Graham,” she said. “Lindsey devoted his life to the service of our nation, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his duties. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and all those whose lives were touched by his enduring legacy.”
Her last high-profile outing was at the World Cup final

Melania’s most recent public appearance was at the FIFA World Cup final in East Rutherford, N.J., on July 19, alongside the president.
The first lady was also seen at her husband’s July 4 Salute to America 250 celebration on the National Mall. She joined him at UFC Freedom 250 on the White House South Lawn in June, sitting ringside with members of the Trump family and UFC President Dana White.
Social media critics weigh in

Melania’s absence didn’t go unnoticed on social media, where critics questioned why she wasn’t at the funeral service, according to reactions reported by the U.S. version of the Mirror.
“She’s a failure as a wife to our president. Abandoning him today at the memorial for his friend. Thank God Eric and Lara Trump are there in support,” one person wrote.
Another questioned how the first lady chose which events to attend, writing, “#melania trump didn’t attend @LindseyGrahamSC funeral with her husband but was perched up at the FIFA World Cup finals?”
Another critic wrote, “Melania, you should be at the funeral. What’s wrong not at dinner and now…”
Another commenter asked, “Why wasn’t Melania there? What a disgrace. Thank God Eric and Lara Trump were there to support him. I pray he dumps her…”
Another commenter wondered, “Why are all these clowns together in the front row? Where’s Melania? Where’s Usha [Vance]?”
The president was joined in the front row of the funeral by Vice President J.D. Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, son Eric Trump and daughter-in-law Lara.
