Michelle Obama had to be ‘intentional’ with her clothes while in the White House

Michelle Obama is reflecting on the “very intentional” choices behind her White House wardrobe, which was much-talked-about during her husband Barack Obama‘s presidency from 2009 to 2017.

In an upcoming two-episode social media series celebrating the June 19 opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, Michelle explains how she used her clothing choices to represent certain designers and depict a larger narrative of American identity.

In the first episode, titled Beauty Belongs to Everyone, Michelle spoke about how influential her fashion choices as first lady were. According to People, who had the first look at the series, she said, “I learned early on that the clothes I wore in the White House would never be seen as just clothes… I had to be very intentional.”

Michelle added that her “talented team” helped her with her, which required paying close attention to “the designer, the color, the silhouette [and] the style.”

She explained, “I thought about who I wanted to lift up, who I wanted to see reflected in what I wore, and what story I wanted to tell about who I am and who we are.”

Michelle Obama said that her White House wardrobe choices always carried a ‘purpose.’ MEGA

The outfits, many of which are now showcased at the Obama Presidential Center Museum, carried a “purpose,” Michelle said.

They were meant to represent freedom in choosing how one presents oneself. They were symbols “of confidence, and about how, here in this country, no one gets to prescribe what it means to feel beautiful. We get to choose it for ourselves.”

Michelle Obama avoided wearing white during her time as the first lady. MEGA

Michelle previously spoke about her style when promoting her 2025 book The Look, in an October 2025 interview with People. “I was a famous person, but I wasn’t a starlet. And so that meant that the clothes could never speak louder than anything I had to say [or do].”

She also explained her choice to avoid wearing white as “a working, active first lady.”

She noted, “I didn’t want my clothes to stop me from engaging people… I had to be able to give a hug. I couldn’t worry about whether somebody got makeup on something.

The second episode, titled The Work That Matters Most, highlights the initiatives Michelle championed during her eight years as first lady to support families, students and communities around the world. Those efforts included the Girls Opportunity Alliance, Reach Higher, Let’s Move! and Joining Forces.

According to Obama.org, the Obama Presidential Center is a 19-acre campus commemorating the presidency of Barack Obama. Located on Chicago’s South Side in Jackson Park, it is a “global hub” where “you can explore the world-class Museum, gather at a branch of the Chicago Public Library, or relax on the Great Lawn.”
