The Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) notified licensees on February 18, 2025, that the use of Red No. 3 in marijuana products must be discontinued following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s January 15, 2025 decision to revoke authorization for the color additive in foods, dietary supplements, and ingested drugs.
Red No. 3 is used to impart red coloring. Ingredients used by CRA-licensed producers in edible marijuana products – including confectionery bases, gummy bases, powders, and capsules – may contain the additive.
Producers must work with their suppliers to identify alternatives to ingredients and color additives containing Red No. 3. Producers currently using Red No. 3, or an ingredient containing it, must update their written product formulations and labeling to reflect any replacement ingredients and color additives.
Questions regarding the use of Red No. 3 may be directed to CRA-Info@michigan.gov
