Billy Ray Cyrus is mourning his longtime friend Dolly Parton after her death coincided with his 65th birthday.
The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer shared a tribute on Instagram on Tuesday (August 25), looking back on their decades-long friendship and revealing a recent message she sent him.
Their friendship eventually extended to Billy Ray‘s family. He asked Dolly to be daughter Miley Cyrus‘ godmother after the eventual pop star was born in 1992. Dolly later appeared as Aunt Dolly on Hannah Montana and collaborated with Miley on music over the years.
Billy Ray recalled growing up watching Dolly before getting to know her after they toured together in the early 1990s. He also revisited tabloid rumors that claimed they were having an affair in 1992.
When Billy Ray went to her dressing room to apologize for the coverage, he said Dolly simply winked and joked, “Honey, this trash sells records!”
He then shared he sent her a “beautiful message.”
She told him “she loved me with her whole heart. I will always love her in the same way ….. with my whole heart … and I always will.”
Dolly died at age 80 on Tuesday, the same day Billy turned 65. Her representatives later confirmed that she had faced a brief battle with cancer, though they have not disclosed the type.
