The new FX on Hulu series The Shards is now streaming with new episodes arriving every Wednesday.
Ryan Murphy‘s new show is set against the vivid backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles and follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite prep school as they navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession and the dangers lurking beneath the surface of American adolescence.
The series is based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, who has classified the book as autofiction as it is semi-autobiographical, but includes many fictional plot points. We’ve broken down what is real and what is not.
The Trawler is the serial killer in The Shards
The season premiere introduces viewers to a serial killer known as the “Trawler,” who starts hunting down teens in the Los Angeles area. The killer becomes known for moving furniture around in victims’ homes and killing their pets, later assembling the victims’ corpses alongside the corpses of the animals.
The character Bret (Igby Rigney) and his close friends at Buckley School are introduced to a new student named Robert Mallory (Homer Gere), who sets off a series of events in the group.

So, who is the killer in the book?
Well, we know the killer is not Robert Mallory.
In the book, Robert dies after getting into a fight with Bret and falling from a penthouse apartment. The death is ruled a suicide and Bret is cleared of any wrongdoing. Robert can’t be the killer as the Trawler claims another victim after his death.
Also in the book, Kaia Gerber‘s character Susan seemingly believes that Bret could be the killer. She gets attacked by a masked man and is able to thwart the attempt by biting his arm. She later notices the same bite mark on Bret’s arm.
In the end though…
The book never reveals the identity of the Trawler. We also never find out who actually attacked Susan and her boyfriend Thom. And we also never find out how Robert truly died.
Of course, the TV show could change this and reveal everything. The season finale will air on September 2.
